Chennai Express, the all time highest grosser Indian movie
was released at 3500 screens in India and 700 outside. If we exclude the rural
population which is still close to 70% of Indian population, we still have more
than 1600 cities and towns. And then there are the rest of the 194 countries
where one can be sure to find some Indians settled. If we take a rough ratio
then it’s just about 2 screens per city in India and per country for the rest
of the world. Thats too less a number to make an impact especially when
compared to numbers generated by Internet.Internet is one tool or medium which
can be found any and everywhere be it the rural India or some part of the
world.
Online premiers have been held in other parts of the world
such as Russia where the first ever was done for the movie ‘Vdrebezgi’. The biggest issue for doing an online premiere
has been piracy but in India pirated copies of the movies are already available
within few days of the launch. Today
with advent of viral marketing, the increased consumption during premiere
should more than make up for the loss due to piracy. Another positive will be
that movie buffs who can’t afford the current ticket rates and hence have
shifted to piracy will switch back again. First day first show has always been
a big attraction for them.
